Worm tea for your garden

What is worm tea?

Worm casting tea is made by steeping finished vermicompost in aerated water. The result is a liquid teeming with beneficial microorganisms that improve soil biology and deliver nutrients directly to plant roots.

How to brew it

You need:

  • 1–2 cups of finished worm castings
  • 4–5 litres of water (let tap water sit 24 hours to off-gas chlorine, or use rain water)
  • A mesh bag or old pillowcase
  • An aquarium pump with air stone (aeration is key)
  • 1 tbsp unsulfured molasses (feeds the microbes)

Method:

  1. Fill your container with water.
  2. Add the molasses and stir.
  3. Place castings in the mesh bag and submerge.
  4. Run the air stone continuously for 24 hours.
  5. Apply immediately — the microbe population degrades quickly after brewing stops.

How to apply

Dilute 1:10 with water for a soil drench or use undiluted as a foliar spray. Apply early morning or evening to avoid UV killing the microbes. Use every 2–4 weeks during the growing season.

Why it works

Healthy soil is a living system. Worm casting tea reintroduces the bacteria, fungi, and protozoa that industrial agriculture strips away — improving water retention, disease suppression, and nutrient availability for your plants.
