Worm tea for your garden
Brew and apply worm casting tea for a natural nutrient boost.
What is worm tea?
Worm casting tea is made by steeping finished vermicompost in aerated water. The result is a liquid teeming with beneficial microorganisms that improve soil biology and deliver nutrients directly to plant roots.
How to brew it
You need:
- 1–2 cups of finished worm castings
- 4–5 litres of water (let tap water sit 24 hours to off-gas chlorine, or use rain water)
- A mesh bag or old pillowcase
- An aquarium pump with air stone (aeration is key)
- 1 tbsp unsulfured molasses (feeds the microbes)
Method:
- Fill your container with water.
- Add the molasses and stir.
- Place castings in the mesh bag and submerge.
- Run the air stone continuously for 24 hours.
- Apply immediately — the microbe population degrades quickly after brewing stops.
How to apply
Dilute 1:10 with water for a soil drench or use undiluted as a foliar spray. Apply early morning or evening to avoid UV killing the microbes. Use every 2–4 weeks during the growing season.
Why it works
Healthy soil is a living system. Worm casting tea reintroduces the bacteria, fungi, and protozoa that industrial agriculture strips away — improving water retention, disease suppression, and nutrient availability for your plants.
